What is BioDiesel?

Biodiesel is a clean burning, biodegradable, non toxic fuel that is used in compression ignition (diesel) engines. Biodiesel is a Non petroluem based diesel fuel, it is not made with fossil fuels like Oil or Coal.

Biodiesel is made by the transestherification of vegetable oil or animal fat and it can be blended in any proportion with conventional petroluem diesel fuel or used alone in any compression ignition (diesel) engine without having to make any modifications to the engine

The officail definition of What biodiesel is, according to statute and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) is as follows:

Biodiesel is defined as mono-alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from vegetable oils or animal fats which conform to ASTM D6751 specifications for use in diesel engines. Biodiesel refers to the pure fuel before blending with diesel fuel. Biodiesel blends are denoted as, “BXX” with “XX” representing the percentage of biodiesel contained in the blend. (ie: B20 is 20% Biodiesel and 80% petroluem diesel)"

ASTM D6751 is the quality standard for biodiesel in the USA and Canada .

The European equivalent is the EN 14214.

In South Africa biodiesel quality is measured according to SANS 1935:2004 which is on the same standard as those in the Unites States and Europe.
