What is Biogas?

 

What is Biogas and Wood gas and how can manure power the Energy Revolution?

Biogas is the gas that is produced when organic matter like manure or plant material is digested and decomposed by anaerobic bacteria. This gas mostly comprise of Methane and Carbon Dioxide. WoodGas is the gas that is produced when biomass or wood is burned at high temperatures with a controlled amount of oxygen. The gas that is released is composed of Nitrogen, Hydrogen, Carbon Monoxide and a small amount of Methane.

Biogas is also called Landfill gas if it is produced at a landfill or swamp or marsh gas. In India, that has numerous biogas plants in the rural areas, they call it Gober (Gobar) gas. They estimate that these biogas plants, that run on cow dung, is installed in over two million households. They use the gas that is produce as fuel for their stoves.
