Carbon Footprint.
A Carbon Footprint is the amount of Greenhouse Gasses, like carbon dioxide, a person or company is responsible for either directly or indirectly. A person or company's carbon footprint is determined by preforming an Energy Audit. Everybody on earth has a Carbon Footprint and how big it is will depend on a number of facts like, for example, the type of transport he uses and the fuel it uses and the amount of electricity he uses and the source thereof. For person or company to manage and reduce it's Carbon Footprint it will first have to do an Energy Audit and determine the amount of greenhouse gasses that it is responsible for. Click here to Find out more about the Carbon Footprint Concept. Your Carbon Footprint and the negative effect that you have on the environment can easily be reduced by changing your habits or switching your old appliances to new energy efficient ones. If possible you can even change your Energy Company to one that generates electricity using Alternative and environmentally friendly energy sources like wind, solar or hydro power. Your Carbon Footprint can also be offset by investing in projects that reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Some of these projects include: - Renewable Energy Projects. Wind, solar and hydro power project as well as biofuel projects like biodiesel. - Methane collection and Combustion. These projects are the typical biogas digester or plant found at landfills, sewage works or farms that collect and burn Biogas. Methane is a big contributor to global warming. - Energy Efficiency. Energy efficiency projects aim to reduce carbon emissions by improving the efficiency of electricity generation, for example co-generation power plants that generate heat and electricity. Another possible project is energy efficient buildings that reduce emissions by using less electricity. The buildings achieve this either by design or by using energy efficient appliances and heating. - Tree Planting and Preservation. Tree planting and preservation projects are also an offset because of trees and other plants ability to "inhale" CO2 and exhale oxygen and because trees are chopped down in developing countries to be used as firewood. When wood is burned it releases Carbon dioxide.
To be sure that you are investing in valid projects with real benefits find out if it is certified under the United Nations' Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). Click here to visit their site. To Calculate your Carbon Footprint visit our Carbon Emissions Calculator. |
